Lesson 1 |
Problem: For what value of x will 8, 12, and x have the same mean (average) as that of 24 and 12?
Step 1: The mean of 24 & 12 = (24 + 12)/2 = 18
Step 2: Now, find the value of x, knowing that the average of x and 8 must be 18:
(x + 8 + 12)/3
=
18
54 = x + 20
Step 3: x = 54-20
x = 34
Step 4: The answer is: 34
Try two practice problems:
| A. | For what value of x will 6, 10, and x have the same mean (average) as that of 20 and 14? |
| B. | On his first 5 Math tests, David received the following scores: 48, 64, 70, 78 and 62. What test score must David earn on his sixth test so that his average (mean score) for all six tests will be 60? |
