Order Of Operations (4-Step Problems)

                    Lesson 1

A set of rules for arithmetic operations are devised to perform calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.

Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.

Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

                                                            Problem:                   Evaluate 4 x 4 x (5 + 2) + 4 using the order of operations.

Solution                    Firstly solving the parenthesis as

Step 1:

4 x 4 x (5 + 2) + 4 = 4 x 4 x 7 + 4

                                                            Solution                    Then multiply 4 and 4 i.e. 4 x 4 x 7 + 4 = 16 x 7 + 4

                                                             Step 2:

                                                             Solution                    Then multiply 16 and 7 i.e. 16 x 7 + 4 = 112 + 4

 Step 3:

                                                             Solution                    Then add 112 and 4 i.e. 112 + 4 = 116

Step 3:

Solution                    The answer is:  116

Step 4:

                                                            Complete

                                                            Try two practice problems:

                                                                                               Evaluate each problem.

A. ((15 – 4) + 3) x 5 + 4

B. 7 x ((6 - 5) x 4) X 2
